The road to your own record
Picture the course in advance
and find the pace that fits you.

The city you want to run becomes your next trip.

THE DREAM
Chasing a personal best or dreaming of a first finish.
This trip is built around your race.
Picture the course in advance
and find the pace that fits you.
Streets lined with cheers, runners all around.
You'll be part of that scene.
Take it slow with the finish still in you,
and meet the city all over again.
From the joy of finishing to the tough moments — read what runners wrote themselves.
“The mile is fun!”This runner climbed cautiously early in the New Balance Fifth Avenue Mile, then accelerated to finish in 5 minutes 47 seconds, beating a 6-minute goal. Entering during marathon training without specific mile preparation, the runner discovered the fun of short races and felt a bolder effort was possible.
“Still, I’m happy with the tiny PR I got as a middle-aged lady who moves her legs for fun.”Ari Scott ran the opening section more aggressively than the previous year at the 2019 New Balance Fifth Avenue Mile and set a personal best with an official time of 6 minutes 39 seconds.
We translated a short line from each public race report and summarized the experience. Finish times are as stated by the author, and past editions may differ from this year's weather and operations.

YOUR ENTRY
Here are the ways to enter and what each requires.

RACE WEEK
Know the course and time limit, and race day comes into focus.
From the 2026 editionWe have not confirmed the start line coordinates yet. The map shows the host city.
The race runs twenty blocks straight down Fifth Avenue, from 80th Street to a finish near Grand Army Plaza at 60th Street.
The course drops gently for most of its length, a profile that has produced fast times —
but because the race is point-to-point and the grade too steep, times set here cannot be ratified as official World Athletics road mile records.
Runners go off in a sequence of heats rather than one mass start.
Age-group and specialty heats —
a Back to School Mile for runners aged 2 to 18, a George Sheehan Memorial Mile for older adults, and heats for NYPD and FDNY members among them —
run through the day, followed by the NYRR Road Mile Championship heats and the professional races.
Entry into the championship heats requires meeting standards of 4:20 for men and 4:55 for women and non-binary runners, and is by invitation only.

Pick up your bib, check your wave.
So on race morning, you can just run.
Bring your registration confirmation email or the QR code from your NYRR account; proxy pickup is also allowed (the participant's QR code plus the proxy's photo ID are required).
On race day, pickup is available at Race-Day Central in front of The Metropolitan Museum of Art (5th Ave & 81st St) and closes 10 minutes after each race starts.
8/29 (Sat)-9/12 (Sat): weekdays 10:00am-7:00pm, weekends 10:00am-5:00pm (closed 9/7); 9/13 (Sun): 5:55am-12:10pm (Race-Day Central on race day)

Fifth Avenue at E. 81st Street, Manhattan (Museum Mile) — nearest subway 86 St station on the Lexington Avenue Line (4/5/6), then walk west to Fifth Ave
NYRR has not yet posted final 2026-specific logistics;
start/finish points reflect the race's historically consistent course.
Fifth Avenue at E. 60th Street, near Grand Army Plaza/southeast corner of Central Park — nearest subway 5 Av/59 St (N/R/W) or 59 St-Columbus Circle (A/B/C/D/1)
Point-to-point mile down Fifth Avenue — start/finish only 20 blocks (~1 mile) apart, walking between them is feasible.
No shuttle bus;
dense Manhattan street race relying entirely on subway/walking.
NYRR directs racers to check mta.info for real-time service changes since closures affect nearby routes.
IMPORTANT: bib pickup is NOT at the race site — it's at NYRR RUN CENTER, 320 West 57th Street, closing 10 min after race start — must be done in advance.
OMNY card
Physical OMNY cards can be bought/reloaded at vending machines in subway stations,
or at 2,700+ retailers citywide including Walgreens, CVS, 7-Eleven, and many bodegas/independent pharmacies.
Works directly at the gates
MetroCard was retired — December 31, 2025 was the last day to buy or refill one.
Since January 2026, OMNY (tap-and-go) is the only fare system for subway, buses, PATH, Staten Island Railway, and the Roosevelt Island Tram.
There's no upfront weekly pass to buy anymore: OMNY automatically caps subway/local-bus fares at $35 (12 rides) within any rolling 7-day period once you use the same card,
phone, or device every time.
If you'd rather use a physical card instead of your bank card, it costs $2 from a station vending machine or $5 at retail stores.
Your start time, fuel and bag drop.
Know them ahead and the run feels easier.
The professional races carry $32,000 in total prize money, with $5,000 to each winner and bonus payments if the pace is fast enough —
under 4:00 for the men's leader and under 4:32 for the women's leader at halfway.
The men's course record is 3:44.3, set by Josh Kerr in 2024;
it broke a mark of 3:47.52 that had stood since Sydney Maree ran it at the inaugural 1981 race, 43 years earlier.
The women's record is 4:14.8, set by Laura Muir in 2022 and matched by Karissa Schweizer in 2024.
Jennifer Simpson has been the most successful athlete in the race's history, winning eight times.
In 2025, Yared Nuguse and Gracie Morris became the first American winners of both races since 2016.
The event has moved around the calendar over the years —
originally held in late September or early October, then shifted to mid-September, near Patriot Day, starting in 2014 —
and has carried a string of title sponsors, from Pepsi and Mercedes-Benz to Discover Card,
Donald Trump and Continental Airlines, before New Balance took over in 2016.
Times are local to New York City. Check the latest official information before the race.
