Istanbul Marathon: 42km from Asia to Europe
A 3:25 half marathon qualifies runners for the full marathon, and the finish line is beside Hagia Sophia. Registration closes October 13.
It takes just 1.5km to cross a continent. The Istanbul Marathon gets it done within minutes of the start.
Setting off from the Asian end of the Bosphorus Bridge, runners cross with the strait below and Europe straight ahead. The finish line lies at the heart of that continent, in front of the Blue Mosque.
Istanbul is often called the only marathon that changes continents within a single course. But the bridge is not the only thing that sets this race apart.
Entry is far more accessible than expected, and the finish line is the city center itself. A 3:25 half marathon is enough to qualify for the full, making this a rare option for runners planning to race their first marathon abroad.
Hagia Sophia is only a few minutes away on foot, medal still around the neck. Registration closes October 13, however, and a Sunday race changes the shape of the postrace trip.
1A 3:25 half marathon is enough to qualify for the full

Not everyone can enter the full marathon. Is the qualifying bar high? Lower than you'd think.
You need one of the following: a marathon finished in under 6:20 or a half marathon in under 3:25 within the past two years, or a 15K in under 2:15 within the past year. A 3:25 half works out to 9:43 per kilometer, a pace you can reach running easy. Upload a finisher certificate or official results page for approval, then pay through the online registration system of Spor ฤฐstanbul, the city's sports agency.
The earlier you enter, the lower the fee: 60 euros in January, 80 euros from February through May, 100 euros in June and July, and 120 euros from August. The price of the same start line can double, and registration closes October 13. Only the most expensive tier remains, with just days left.

29 a.m. start, with a 9-minute-per-kilometer cutoff pace

The finish cutoff is 6 hours, 20 minutes. Divide 42.195km by that and the required pace comes to just over 9 minutes per kilometer. Runners must pass 10K by 10:32, 20K by 12:04, 30K by 13:36, and 40K by 15:08 local timeโa pace that leaves room for a run-walk strategy.
But a cutoff is still a cutoff. Once each checkpoint closes, roads behind it reopen to traffic in stages: 5K at 9:45, 15K at 11:18, 25K at 12:50, and 35K at 14:22. The first checkpoint comes at 1K, at 9:10, so don't get too relaxed in the start-line crowds.
31.5km across the bridge, a coastal descent, then Kennedy Avenue

The start line sits at the Asian end of the First Bosphorus Bridge, officially the 15 Temmuz ลehitler Kรถprรผsรผ. For one day, the roughly 1.5km span belongs to the runners. Europe lies straight ahead and the Bosphorus below, making restraint the hardest part of this stretch.
On the flat bridge, you run faster than usual without noticing. A few seconds gained in the first 1.5km will cost far more later. Across the bridge, the course drops steeply down Barbaros Boulevard to the waterfront.
It passes the Naval Museum near 5K, Dolmabahรงe Palace at 6K and the Galata Bridge over the Golden Horn at 9K. Between 10K and 13K come Topkapฤฑ Palace, the Egyptian Bazaar and Sirkeci station. Guidebook landmarks arrive five minutes apart, all on the descent.
The eyes stay busy; the quads are already at work. After 13K, the course becomes an out-and-back along Kennedy Avenue, between the city walls and the Sea of Marmara. Flat and straight, it looks easy on paper, but the scenery thins out, and after the turnaround near the Air Force Academy at roughly 28K, the Bosphorus wind blows head-on.
November daytime temperatures in Istanbul run 12 to 16ยฐC (about 54 to 61ยฐF), good running weather, though rain is possible. The days are short, but the 15:20 finish cutoff falls well before sunset.
4Race day falls on Sunday, when Istanbulโs best-known market is closed

The race takes place on Sunday, November 1. The Grand Bazaar, the first market most Istanbul visitors think of, opens Monday through Saturday and closes on Sunday. Any plan to finish the race and head straight there will end at the locked doors.
So plan it this way: move the market to Saturday before the race or Monday after, and save Sunday afternoon for the Egyptian Bazaar, which opens every day. The course already passes it near 10K, so you'll know the way. Bib and timing-chip pickup takes place at the marathon expo.
As of October 2, the 2026 venue and schedule had not been announced. In 2025, the expo ran for three days, Thursday through Saturday before the race, at the Yenikapฤฑ event grounds. Expo on Saturday afternoon, then the market: an easy plan.
5Two postrace days, with Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque a walk from the finish

Sunday's finish line is in Sultanahmet Square, between the Blue Mosque and the Egyptian Obelisk. From there, walk to Hagia Sophia with the medal still around your neck. Hagia Sophia opens daily, and admission for foreign visitors is 25 euros.
On Fridays, it closes for a little over two hours around midday prayers. The Blue Mosque charges no admission, but tourists can't enter during the five daily prayer times, and it also closes on Friday mornings. On tired postrace legs, timing matters.
On race morning, your bib gets you free rides on Istanbul's municipal buses, trams, metro and ferries, which makes the trip to the start line easier. Monday is palace day. Topkapฤฑ Palace closes on Tuesdays, and from November through March ticket sales end at 17:00, making Monday your last chance.
Dolmabahรงe Palace, by contrast, closes on Mondays. You ran past it at 6K; on this trip, leave it at that. Hagia Sophia and the Grand Bazaar are both open on Monday, and the market that was shut on Sunday reopens.
6From the airport to the finish area: stay in Sultanahmet

The trip from Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet takes 60 to 80 minutes, with transfers between the M11 and M2 metro lines and the T1 tram. Entry requirements vary by nationality and should be checked as soon as registration is complete. Sultanahmet is the practical base, in the same neighborhood as the finish line.
The walk back avoids waiting for a taxi on postrace legs, while Hagia Sophia and the Egyptian Bazaar are both nearby. The start line, however, is across the Bosphorus at the Asian end of the bridge. Race morning requires an early start, though the free public transport makes the journey easier.
Editor's pick
Chasing a PR? This race belongs farther down the list. The rush of the opening 1.5km can take its toll later, and a headwind often waits along the flat Kennedy Avenue.
But few races can match it for runners who want their first marathon fixed in memory as a single scene, ending in the heart of Istanbul. A 3:25 half marathon earns entry, the cutoff allows a generous 9 minutes per kilometer, and Hagia Sophia is within walking distance of the finish line. Registration runs through October 13.
The itinerary? The expo and Grand Bazaar on Saturday, the race and Egyptian Bazaar on Sunday, and Topkapฤฑ Palace on Monday.
Cross a continent in 1.5km, then pay for it over the remaining 40.695km. Istanbul waits at the end.
