Read the original on note“The time of 1 hour 27 minutes 15 seconds was a little disappointing, but I was glad to finish.”
At the Nanyo Sawayaka Wine Marathon, an early effort to catch a group left the runner’s pace dropping on the long climb. Speed returned on the later descent, leading to a finish in 1 hour 27 minutes 15 seconds, followed by wine and a hot spring soak.

The Nanyo Sawayaka Wine Marathon is an autumn race linking the hot springs and fruit-growing areas of Nanyo City in Japan's Yamagata Prefecture.
The word “wine” appears in the name because the event reflects the region's long history of grape cultivation and wine production.
Nanyo presents grapes and hot springs as local highlights, and the race follows that scenery to connect course.
Centered around half marathon, the event also includes short-distance races,
children's and pair events, and walking events, bringing families together at the same festival.
Half marathon starts at the civic gymnasium and passes through Akayu Onsen, Kumano Taisha Shrine, and the fruit-growing area.
After entering the hot-spring district from the city center and then heading toward the orchards,
you encounter Nanyo's residential areas and agricultural landscape in a single course.
The shorter events return through Akayu's city center, while half marathon follows a route covering a wider area.
Rather than simply adding distance, course can be seen as the opportunity to experience the region's contrasting landscapes in sequence.
The event is closer to a festival introducing the region and a community run than to a race focused solely on competition.
Nanyo City, the local board of education, and regional sports organizations jointly host it,
and a local corporate athletics team also runs alongside participants.
Half marathon, where runners compete for finishing times,
takes place alongside pair events where families run together, so the atmosphere is not focused on just one type of race.
Passing through the hot-spring town and fruit-growing areas in succession and meeting local residents along the way is the clearest way to describe the event.
