THE DREAM
Spartathlon is Greece's signature ultra road race: about 245 km from the Acropolis in Athens to the statue of King Leonidas in Sparta,
to be covered within 36 hours.
It retraces the route Pheidippides ran to Sparta to ask for reinforcements just before the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC,
and only runners who meet set performance standards may apply.
Picture the course in advance
and find the pace that fits you.
Streets lined with cheers, runners all around.
You'll be part of that scene.
Take it slow with the finish still in you,
and meet the city all over again.
From the joy of finishing to the tough moments — read what runners wrote themselves.
“What I hadn't bargained for was the descent off the mountain.”After climbing 900 m, the rocky descent took close to 45 minutes for 1 mile, and a wrong turn near CP50 cost about 80 minutes. In Corinth the crew cooled the runner down with ice water, and the race ended at 33 hours 3 minutes with a kiss on the foot of the Leonidas statue.
“The Spartathlon is by far the toughest event I've done.”The midday temperature topped 30℃, making it hard even to eat, and the runner reached Corinth only 25 minutes before the cut-off. After crossing the mountain, the runner built a buffer of more than 1 hour in wind and rain, and walked the last 5 km to finish with 2 hours to spare.
We translated a short line from each public race report and summarized the experience. Finish times are as stated by the author, and past editions may differ from this year's weather and operations.

Runners start · local time — 245 km: Saturday 07:00 start (2026 edition)
Spartathlon began in 1982, when British Royal Air Force officer John Foden and his companions followed the account of Herodotus and tried running from Athens to Sparta within 36 hours.
The following year, 1983, the first international race was held with 45 runners from 11 countries,
and since the International Spartathlon Association was founded in 1984, the race has taken place every year at the end of September.
The course is a one-way point-to-point route, and the distance according to the 2026 roadbook is 244.74 km.
The start is at 7 a.m. on Dionysiou Areopagitou Street below the Acropolis, and the route passes Elefsina,
Megara (42.2 km) and the Corinth Canal (about 78 km) before entering the Peloponnese.
After Ancient Corinth and Nemea (122.7 km), runners must cross the Mount Parthenio pass at about 1,100–1,200 m above sea level in the middle of the night;
the climb from Lyrkia toward the summit, gaining roughly 960 m over 13 km, is the crux of the race.
From there the route goes through Nestani and Tegea (193.9 km), crosses one last climb and descends into the Evrotas valley to reach Sparta.
Each of the 75 checkpoints has a cut-off time, and missing even one means immediate elimination;
the overall time limit is 36 hours.
In the 2026 race, 323 runners started and 279 finished;
the men's winner was Tamás Bódis of Hungary (19:40:51) and the women's winner was Despoina Simantrakou of Greece (24:45:43).
The race ends when runners touch the foot of the Leonidas statue, and finishers receive an olive wreath and a cup of water from the Evrotas River.

This may change for the next edition.
Pick up your bib, check your wave.
So on race morning, you can just run.
OASIS Hotel in Glyfada, Thursday and Friday before the race (24–25 September in 2026), runners in person only
Akropoli (Athens Metro Line 2)
The start is on Dionysiou Areopagitou Street beside the Odeon of Herodes Atticus; be there by 06:30. Runners on the organiser's package are bussed from their Glyfada hotel at 05:45. Fly into Athens International Airport (ATH).
Athlete registration takes place at the OASIS Hotel in Glyfada on the Thursday and Friday before the race. International runners must buy the EXTRA package, which covers accommodation and transport in Athens and Sparti (Athens–Sparti about 245 km by road).
Sparti town centre
The finish is at the statue of King Leonidas in Sparti; showers are at the municipal stadium behind the statue. Package runners stay in organiser hotels in Sparti and are returned to Athens by the organiser.
Your start time, fuel and bag drop.
Know them ahead and the run feels easier.
Applications are accepted online only, usually from late January to late February (25 January–25 February for the 2026 edition).
Within the last 3 years you must have met one of the official qualifying standards,
such as 120 km in a 12-hour race (women 110 km), 100 miles in 21 hours (women 22 hours) or 180 km in a 24-hour race (women 170 km),
and the results must come from an official race with at least 5 finishers whose results are published online.
If there are more than 400 applicants, runners with performances at least 25% better than the standard,
those with 10 or more finishes and single applicants from their country are selected first, and the rest is decided by lottery.
Runners who were left on the waiting list the previous year get two lottery tickets.
Once accepted, you must submit the entry form and photo by mid-May and the Entry fee by 10 June,
and international runners are required to buy a 1,250-euro package that bundles accommodation, meals and transport in Athens and Sparta.
Do not forget a medical certificate either.
The bib and race bag can be collected only in person at the registration hotel in Glyfada from two days before the race.
Drop bags handed in during the day before the race are transported to 24 designated checkpoints.
A headlamp with spare batteries and a rear reflective light are mandatory, and running without them can lead to disqualification.
Poles and music devices are banned.
Crew support is allowed only at the 16 designated checkpoints;
receiving help anywhere else earns a yellow card, and two yellow cards mean disqualification.
During the day the coastal lowlands get close to 30℃, while the mountain section at night is bitterly cold,
so spread a light waterproof jacket and warm layers across your drop bags.
The early cut-off of 9 hours 30 minutes to Corinth (79.8 km) is tight, so it is important to build a buffer in the early stages.
Times are local to Athens. Check the latest official information before the race.
