THE DREAM
The Naha Marathon was founded in 1985 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Naha and Honolulu,
and was modeled after the Honolulu Marathon.
From the following year, it became established that it was held every year on the first Sunday of December.
The number of participants in the first competition was 4,503, but the number exceeded 10,000 in the 5th and 20,000 in the 10th,
and the current number of participants is 30,000.
It is a full marathon course certified by the Japan Association of Athletics Federations that circulates through the five municipalities of Naha City,
Tomigusuku City, Itoman City, Haebaru Town, and Yaese Town in the southwestern part of the main island of Okinawa.
It is characterized by a one-way circulation structure without turnaround point.
The number of participants from outside Okinawa Prefecture and overseas is increasing every year,
with participants from within the prefecture accounting for approximately 70% of the total.
The 2026 competition will be held as the 40th commemorative competition.

Streets lined with cheers, runners all around.
You'll be part of that scene.
Take it slow with the finish still in you,
and meet the city all over again.
From the joy of finishing to the tough moments — read what runners wrote themselves.
“I completed the race safely with help from many people.”
Sports Tripper completed the 2025 NAHA Marathon despite the heat and steep climbs. They recorded that the pre-race registration and bib pickup, the crowded start area, the strong support along the course, and the private aid stations set up by local residents greatly enhanced the race experience.

reerac documented everything from bib pickup the day before to the hotel and route to the start, about 100 meters of elevation gain and loss on the course, the hot weather, the nonstop crowd support, and unofficial aid stations set up by locals. They set a personal best of 3:47:38, and the original post also includes photos and video.

Marie worked through the long uphill section over the first 20K, the heat, and the aid stations locals had set up all along the route, along with their cheers. She also left detailed notes on restrooms and getting to the start corral, and despite foot pain, finished in 5:28.

This 2024 participant paced themselves through clear, hot conditions early on, then battled heat and muscle cramps after the 30K mark. With help from informal aid stations set up by locals and crowd support along the course, they finished in 5:23 (chip time 5:11), 33 minutes faster than their previous best.

Pick up your bib, check your wave.
So on race morning, you can just run.
Bib (an integrated BibTag) must be worn above the waist on both the front and back of the body.
Failure to record a time because it was not worn or was worn incorrectly results in disqualification.
The distribution method and schedule for bib for the 2026 edition (40th edition) will be announced on the official website.
Marathon
Yui Rail (monorail) Okunoyama Kōen Station (奥武山公園駅) or Tsuboikawa Station (壺川駅)
Start and finish both at Okunoyama Park (奥武山公園), Naha City. Both monorail stations are about 1 minute's walk from the venue.
40th anniversary edition. Date confirmed Dec 6, 2026, 9:00 AM start.
Large event (~30,000 participants) — expect crowded monorail; road closures citywide across 5 municipalities during race hours. It’s a 1-minute walk from Yui Rail’s Shigawa Station or Obuyama Park Station.
It’s 5 to 10 minutes by bus or taxi from Eunji Gong Port. On the day of the competition, the parking lot at Omuyama Park is very crowded.
Please use buses, taxis, and monorail.
Yui Rail (monorail) Okunoyama Kōen Station (奥武山公園駅) or Tsuboikawa Station (壺川駅)
Finish is at Okunoyama Stadium within the same park complex, same two stations apply.
Traffic control information, including detour routes around the airport, is provided on the official course page.
Not specifically confirmed, but with monorail stations adjacent to venue, shuttle likely unnecessary for the start/finish area itself.
Your start time, fuel and bag drop.
Know them ahead and the run feels easier.
The race is held every year on the first Sunday of December, making it a good option for runners traveling from Korea during winter.
Naha’s average December temperature is a mild 18.7°C (high around 21.2°C and low around 16.3°C),
but strong northerly winds can make coastal sections feel cooler, so bringing a light outer layer is advisable.
Rainfall is relatively low, although overcast days are common.
Official aid stations provide water, sports drink, sponges and salt candies,
while the many unofficial aid stations along the course are famous for handing out fruit, chocolate and ice pops.
However,
runners competing as registered Japan Association of Athletics Federations (JAAF) athletes may be disqualified if they consume food outside official aid stations,
so take note if you are aiming for an officially recognized time.
The finish rate initially stood in the 90% range,
but it has fallen to around 70% in warmer years and even into the 50% range in particularly difficult years, making condition management important.
Times are local to Naha. Check the latest official information before the race.
