Running Your First Marathon Abroad? These Beginner-Friendly Asian Races Are a Sure Bet
For runners choosing a first marathon abroad, we picked five races in Asia. Ibusuki has an eight-hour cutoff. On Ishigaki Island, the daytime high reaches 21.5ยฐC (about 71ยฐF) even in January. Nagoya starts and finishes at a dome. Singapore draws an unusually large share of first-timers. And Naha, where three in 10 runners didn't reach the finish line, is here as a warning.
Five hours, 35 minutes, and nine seconds. That's the average finishing time Japanese running magazine Runners recorded for the Ibusuki Nanohana Marathon, held every January at the southern tip of the Satsuma Peninsulaโand it's the slowest in Japan.
Nearly two in five finishers crossed the line after more than six hours, and 18.5 percent of finishers were 60 or older. If you're flying to another country to run your first marathon, this is the kind of race you look for first.
Is this a start line where it's OK to run with the very last group? There's a reason to move fast, too.
International registration for Ibusuki closes October 18, 2026, and for the Ishigakijima Marathon on October 31. As of October 9, 2026, three of the five races below are open for entry, and two are worth knowing about for their next editions.
And the last one comes with a warning.
1Ibusuki Nanohana Marathon: An 8-Hour Cutoff, but Youโll Still Have to Run the Final 7K

In January 2026, the runner behind the YouTube channel Aya - London finished a first marathon here. The course went up and down gentle hills again and again, and from 30K those hills stretched out even longer, making it a pretty tough course. The verdict was still this: โFor my first full marathon, it was a really good experience.โ
The organizing committee puts it this way in its official English overview: โThe course has some steep sections, but the raceโs eight-hour time limit is the longest of any marathon in Japan, making it easy for even first-time marathoners to participate.โ The 44th edition starts at 9 a.m.
on Sunday, January 10, 2027, with 10,000 spots filled first come, first served. The entry fee is ยฅ11,000, the same through RUNJAPAN, the international entry portal, and international registration closes at 11:59 p.m.
Japan time on Sunday, October 18, 2026. International entrants can pick up bibs at the Ibusuki Municipal Gymnasium the afternoon before or from 6:30 to 8 a.m.
on race morning. But the first bus from Kagoshima Airport to Ibusuki doesnโt leave until 10:30 a.m.
, so thereโs no getting there straight from the airport on race day. Stay in Ibusuki the night before, or book the raceโs direct shuttleโit leaves Kagoshima-Chuo Station at 5 a.m.
on race dayโby December 18, 2026. The course passes Lake Ikeda, the largest lake in Kyushu, circles the base of Mount Kaimon (Kaimondake)โnicknamed โSatsuma Fujiโโand runs past Nishi-Oyama Station, the southernmost JR station in Japan. Fifteen aid stations sit every 2.5 kilometers, and residents hand out bonito belly and sweet potatoes.
But those eight hours arenโt spread evenly. Checkpoints sit at 29K (3 p.m.
, six hours after the start) and at 35K, at JR Yamakawa Station (4 p.m., seven hours in), which leaves one hour for the final 7.2 kilometers.
The 35K-to-37K climb that the runner behind the YouTube channel Mountain Runner called โthe final-boss hillโ falls inside that last hour. You can walk up to the 35K checkpoint; after that, you have to run again, faster than 8:20 per kilometer (about 13:25 per mile).

2Ishigakijima Marathon: A First Marathon on an Island Where January Highs Reach 21.5ยฐC

โFinally, the sea. Finally, at 30K.โ Thatโs what the runner behind the YouTube channel ใใจใพใจใใฃใณใใซ called out at the 30K mark of the January 2026 Ishigakijima Marathon.
The one-way loop around Ishigaki Island in southern Okinawa Prefecture starts in town, brushes the coast briefly, then heads inland into the foothills, climbing to about 70 meters (230 feet) above sea level around 18K to 19K. The runner behind ๆทฑๅ็ทๅกพใฎRUNใกใใใญใ, who ran the same year, gave fair warning at the start line: โItโs a course with seriously brutal ups and downs.โ In January, Ishigaki Islandโs average daytime high is 21.5ยฐC (about 71ยฐF)โshort-sleeve weather on a start line in the dead of Japanโs winter.
At the 2026 race, the finish rate across all events, including the half marathon and 10K, was 97.9 percent, according to Okinawa broadcaster RBC, and Ishigaki City promotes the race every year as โthe yearโs first run on Ishigaki Island.โ In a July 2025 Ryukyu Shimpo report, Deputy Mayor Eiichiro Chinen said, โWe hope many people will take part,โ and in July 2026, planning director Daiki Suganuma told the same paper that the city wants to โcreate opportunities for runners to experience our local specialtiesโ at the aid stations. The islandโs brown sugar and salt are set out there, and runnersโ videos also show island bananas and ice.
At the 24th edition, the marathon starts at 9 a.m. on Sunday, January 17, 2027, from Ishigaki City Central Sports Park.
The cutoff is seven hours, with checkpoints at halfway (3 hours, 15 minutes after the start) and at 34K (5 hours, 30 minutes). General entry is ยฅ8,000. Registration is online only through Saturday, October 31, 2026, and international runners sign up through RUNJAPANโs overseas portal.
Bib pickup is only at the cityโs general gymnasium, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.
m. on Saturday, January 16, the day before the race, and a local bus from the islandโs airport to town takes 30 to 45 minutes. One more thing: the start is an hour later than in 2026.
On race day in 2026, the afternoon temperature climbed to nearly 25ยฐC (about 77ยฐF), and in 2027 youโll spend an extra hour of that midday heat on the road. That 21.5ยฐC is a reason to wear short sleevesโand a reason to carry more water.

3Nagoya Womenโs Marathon: A Women-Only Race That Starts and Finishes at a Dome

โThe moment I entered this straightaway, my heart was full with the feeling that Iโd done it.โ Thatโs how the runner behind the YouTube channel AZU RUN TRIP described the final stretch of the March 2026 Nagoya Womenโs Marathon, calling it a fun race where volunteers greet you with happy faces. For 2027, this women-only race sets aside 3,500 of its 22,000 spots for international entries.
Most Japan-based runners get in through a lottery or a separate category, but international entry is first come, first served. Entry is ยฅ24,000โยฅ25,000. The official English guidelines list the deadline as 11:59 p.
m. Japan time on December 25, 2026, but registration closes early if the field fills before then, and thereโs a separate English-language help desk. The race starts at 9:10 a.
m. on Sunday, March 14, 2027, at Vantelin Dome Nagoya and finishes back inside the same dome. The time limit is seven hours, and the 2026 finish rate was 96.6 percent.
Read the checkpoint schedule, though, and youโll see the time isnโt handed out evenly. The first checkpoint, at 6K (10:30 a.m.)
, leaves room to spare, but on the provisional schedule the halfway checkpoint at 21.5K closes at 12:52 p.m. and the 35K checkpoint at 2:59 p.
m. Start from the last corral, and youโll need to hold roughly 10 minutes per kilometer through both of those checkpoints. Since 2025, every finisher has received a crystal tumbler.
Bib pickup is only at the dome, two days before the race and the day before, so plan to arrive in Nagoya by 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 13, at the latest.
From Chubu Centrair International Airport, a limited express train gets you to Nagoya Station in under 30 minutes. The wild card is the March wind. The same runner reported 3ยฐC (about 37ยฐF) before the start and, midrace, called out: โThe windโs so strong the cups are getting blown all over the place.โ
With temperatures at 3ยฐC and wind on top of that, pack an outer layer you donโt mind tossing.

4Singapore Marathon: Nearly 40% of Marathon and Half-Marathon Entrants Are First-Timers

Nearly 40 percent of marathon and half-marathon entrants at the 2026 Singapore Marathon are taking on that distance for the first time, according to local outlet Mothership. Starting in 2026, the race has a new name and organizer and will be held as the BYD Singapore International Marathon. Event director Shalindran Sathiyanesan said in an interview on the raceโs official website: โRespect the distance and trust your preparations.
A marathon is as much about patience as it is about fitness.โ The marathon starts at 4:30 a.m.
on Sunday, December 6, 2026, in front of the F1 Pit Building at Marina Bay and finishes inside the National Stadium in Kallang. The time limit is seven hours. On race day, free trains run every 15 minutes starting at 2:30 a.
m., race information, registration, and help are all in English, and more than 14,000 international runners from 80 countries came for the 2025 race. But the 2026 marathon is already sold out.
All 3,000 international spots in the 12,000-runner field are gone, and organizers announced on August 30 that the local allocation had sold out, too. A lot of first-timers doesnโt make it an easy race. Singapore averages 26.8ยฐC (about 80ยฐF) with 85.5 percent humidity in December.
An hour before the 2025 start, the runner behind the YouTube channel ้ชจๅคชใฉใณใใผใใใใใผใใ reported, โItโs 25 degrees right now, and the humidity weโre all worried about is 89 percent,โ and said not to expect a fast time. The runner behind prischewdotcom could feel the humidity from the start but praised aid stations stocked with buckets for dousing yourself. George W admitted the crowds at the venue were nerve-racking, but then โI realized everyone was running on the same course, the same 42 km.โ
Getting by in English is a clear plus. Running your first 42 kilometers in tropical humidity is a different matter, thoughโSingapore is the safer pick after youโve finished a half marathon.

5NAHA Marathon: A 30,000-Runner Festival Where 3 in 10 Failed to Finish

The runner behind the YouTube channel heesley, who ran the NAHA Marathon in December 2025, said that โwhen I stepped on the start it was already three and a half minutes into the race.โ The 6-hour, 15-minute time limit runs on gun time, so those three and a half minutes came straight off the clockโand the same rule applies to the 40th edition, which starts at 9 a.m.
on Sunday, December 6, 2026. Naha checks a lot of boxes for a first marathon abroad. Onoyama Park, home to the start line, is five to 10 minutes from Naha Airport by bus or taxi, and residents along the course hand out fruit and ice.
The people along the course were so nice, heesley said: โI even took two sticks of ice cream.โ But the 2025 results, compiled by the Okinawa Times in July 2026, tell a different story. Of 23,859 starters, 16,808 crossed the finish lineโa finish rate of 70.45 percent.
Why did close to one in three starters fall short? First, there are checkpoints at Peace Memorial Park at 21.3K (12:15 p.m.)
and at 34.3K (2:10 p.m.), and the 6:15 time limit is shorter than at any other race in this story.
Second, a hill near 20K climbs to 85 to 90 meters (about 280 to 295 feet) above sea level, right in the middle of the course. โ1k up. Crazy,โ heesley said, calling it โthe toughest uphill stretch here.โ
Third, the heat. Nahaโs average December high is 21.5ยฐC (about 71ยฐF), but on race day in 2025 it hit 23.7ยฐC (about 75ยฐF), and heesley said that for the last three years, race day has brought rising temperatures and no clouds. Registration for 2026 opened July 1 and filled 10 days later, on July 11; the 2027 race date hasnโt been announced yet.
Naha is a better fit for your second marathon than your firstโonce youโre confident you can handle the hills and the heat inside 6 hours, 15 minutes.

Editor's pick
If we could recommend only one race for your first marathon abroad, it would be Ishigakijima. It has a seven-hour cutoff, January highs of 21.5ยฐC (about 71ยฐF), and a city that promotes it as โthe yearโs first run on Ishigaki Island.โ Go in knowing that you wonโt get a real view of the sea until 30K and that the midday heat lingers, and youโre less likely to be disappointed.
Registration closes October 31, 2026. If the clock scares you most, head to Ibusuki. You get seven hours to reach the 35K checkpoint, so the math works even if you mix in walking.
The catch: its October 18 deadline is the earliest, and youโll have to run again for the final 7.2 kilometers. For women who want a big race in a big city, thereโs Nagoya. First-come, first-served international registration stays open through December 25โjust remember that both the halfway and 35K checkpoints require roughly 10 minutes per kilometer.
Singapore and Naha can wait for a future edition. Go to Singapore when youโre ready for the humidity, and to Naha when youโre ready for the hills and a 6-hour, 15-minute cutoff.
Nearly two in five Ibusuki finishers took more than six hours. At that start line, even the back of the pack makes it to the finish.
